Quite often in boundary-value problems of mathematical physics one encounters the solution of symmetric positive definite systems of linear equations. These systems are typically solved numerically by a preconditioned conjugate gradient-type method. For these methods the algebraic multilevel iteration is described as a preconditioner. Methods of optimal order and high robustness are discussed and new results on upper bounds on important parameters are given.
