The author considers the deficiency index and the spectrum of the operator \(L_0\) generated by a quasi-differential expression of an arbitrary (even and odd) order with complex-valued coefficients. The results are similar to those given by \textit{S. A. Orlov} [Dokl. Akad. Nauk SSSR, New Ser. 92, 483--486 (1953; Zbl 0053.05803)] for a differential operator of even order.
