The model used in this paper has a rotor which is connected to a nonrotating massless ring by linear springs and viscous dashpots. As a consequence of the different radii of this ring and the stiff stator a clearence is presented. The corresponding restoring forces are only present when the clearence is exceeded. The maximum Lyapunov exponent is used to study sensitivity to perturbations and cell mapping is used to indicate the existence of multiple solutions.
