The paper under review is a brief popular and stimulating survey on classical results and new trends in finite and infinite packing theory. Starting with the Kepler problem, kissing numbers and lattice packings the second part is mainly devoted to finite parametric packings, sausage phenomenons and to applications of parametric densities to crystal growth and micro-clusters.
