The authors study the coupling between radiation and convection, for both transparent and participating media, in a differentially heated cavity. The influence of Rayleigh and Planck numbers, as well as the optical thickness, are examined. A comparison between a purely two-dimensional case and the results obtained in the mid-plane of a long rectangular enclosure is presented.
