Es handelt sich um die Differentialgleichung \[ \frac{\partial^2s}{\partial t^2}-\sum_{h=1}^n \frac{\partial^2s}{\partial x_h^2} =k(t,x_1, \ldots,x_n). \] Sie wurde in typischer Form von \textit{Herglotz}, \textit{Riemann-Hadamard} und \textit{Fourier-Poisson} behandelt (vgl. \textit{Herglotz}, Nachrichten Göttingen 1904, 549-556 (F. d. M. 35, 866 (JFM 35.0866.*)); \textit{Riemann}, Partielle Differentialgleichungen (1869; F. d. M. 2, 175 (JFM 02.0175.*)-177), \S 106; \textit{Hadamard}, Acta Math. 31 (1908), 333-380 (F. d. Die \textit{Herglotz}sche Methode verwendet die Substitution \(t=iw\), wodurch man auf die Poissonsche Gleichung in \(n + 1\) Dimensionen geführt wird. Für die Auswertung des lösenden Integrals auf komplexem Wege sind die Fälle gerader bzw. ungerader Dimension zu trennen. Die Verf. bringen diese Ergebnisse mit der ``Methode de la descente'' von \textit{Hadamard} in Verbindung, gemäß welcher der Übergang vom gelösten \(n\)-dimensionalen zum \((n-1)\)-dimensionalen Problem gegeben wird. Aus beiden Methoden lassen sich überdies die Lösungsdarstellungen der sogenannten ``Polarisationsmethode'' (vgl. \textit{J. Goulon}, Sur l'intégration des équations aux dérivées partielles du second ordre par la méthode des caractéristiques, Thése (1902; F. d. M. 33, 360 (JFM 33.0360.*))) gewinnen. Schließlich wird noch auf die Identität der \textit{Fourier-Poisson}schen Lösung mit der \textit{Herglotz}schen verwiesen.
