Wendet man auf einen im Raume gegebenen Punkt jede Transformation einer Gruppe von \(n\) Punkttransformationen an, so bekommt man ein System von \(n\) Punkten. Verschiebt man dieses Punktsystem in immer neue Lagen nach einem bestimmten Gesetz, so hat man schließlich die ``space group'' des Verfassers. Diese ``Punktgruppen'' bilden für ihn die Grundlage einer allgemeinen Methode für die Untersuchung der Kristallstruktur.
