Die Auflösung obiger Gleichung, worin \(| x| > 1, n > 2\) ist, wird zurückgeführt auf ein System von Gleichungen der Gestalt \[ \frac {x^p -1}{x-1}=y^q \text{ bzw. } py^q, \] wo \(p\) ein Primteiler von \(n.\) Durchführung nur in zwei Spezialfällen: Die Gleichung ist unauflösbar für \(n\equiv 0 \pmod 3\), \(q > 3\) und für \(n \equiv 0\pmod 4\), außer falls \(n=4, q=2, x=7.\)
