    Aus \(\lim\limits_{n=\infty}x_{n+1} - x_n = s\) folgt bekanntlich \(\lim\limits_{n=\infty}\dfrac{x_n}x=s\), aber nicht umgekehrt; dagegen folgen diese beiden Beziehungen, falls für \(a<1\): \(\lim \left( x_{n+1}-x_n-\dfrac{ax_n}n\right)=s\) ist. (\textit{Mercer}, Lond. M. S. Proc. (2) 5, 206; F. d. M. 38, 428 (JFM 38.0428.*), 1907.) Im Bestreben, diesen Grenzwertsatz zu verallgemeinern, ist der Verf. zu mehreren Sätzen gelangt, von denen ich einige beispielsweise anführe: Es sei \(a=\alpha+i\beta\) und \(\alpha \neq 1\); dann folgt aus \(\lim\limits_{x=\infty}f'(x)-\dfrac axf(x)=0\): \(\lim\limits_{n=\infty} f(x) - Cx^\alpha=0\); ebenso aus \(\lim\limits_{n=\infty}f(n+1)-f(n)\dfrac anf(n)=0\): \(\lim \limits_{n=\infty}f(n)C\dfrac{\varGamma(n+a)}{\varGamma(n)}=0\), und hier ist \(C=0\), falls \(\alpha < 1\) ist. Ferner: Nimmt \(\lambda_n\) mit \(n\) zu, und konvergiert die Reihe \(\sum \varrho_n\equiv \sum\left(\dfrac{\lambda_{n+1}-\lambda_n}{\lambda_n}\right)^2\), und ist \(\lim\limits_{n=\infty}\dfrac{f_{n+1}-f_n}{\lambda_{n+1}\lambda_n}-a\dfrac{I_n}{\lambda_n}=0\), so ist auch \(\lim\limits_{n=\infty}\dfrac 1{\lambda_n}(f_n-C\varPhi_n)=0\), wo \(\varPhi_n\) soviel bedeutet wie \((1+a\varrho_1)(1+a\varrho_2) \cdots (1 + a\varrho_{n_1})\).
