Es sei \(\varepsilon\) eine unendliche Menge reeller, im Intervall (0,1) stetiger Funktionen und für jede Funktion \(\varphi (x)\) von \(\varepsilon\) \[ \int_0^1[\varphi (x)]^2\,dx=1. \] Ferner sei \(\varepsilon\) ein Orthogonalsystem, d. h. \[ \int_0^1\varphi (x)\,\psi (x)\,dx=0, \] wenn \(\varphi (x)\) und \(\psi (x)\) \textit{zwei} beliebige Funktionen aus \(\varepsilon\) sind: dann ist \(\varepsilon\) notwendig \textit{abzählbar}.
