Eine kolloidale Lösung wird aufgefaßt als ein System von der Leitfähigkeit 1, in dem regelmäßig nach drei verschiedenen Koordinatenrichtungen hin Kugeln von anderer Leitfähigkeit verteilt sind. Unter der Annahme, daß der Strom in Richtung einer der Koordinaten fließe, wird mit Hülfe einer Methode, die der von Lord \textit{Rayleigh} nachgebildet ist, abgeleitet, daß dann eine Verschiebung der Kugeln resultiert; diese bewirkt, daß das Medium sich in optischelektrischer Beziehung wie ein optisch einachsiger Kristall verhält, dessen Achse in der Strömungsrichtung liegt. Es folgen kurze Vergleiche mit der durch mechanische Zerrung und magnetische Felder hervorgerufenen Doppelbrechung.
