The author studies Godbillon-Vey sequences [ cf. \textit{C. Godbrillon} and \textit{J. Vey}, C. R. Acad. Sci., Paris, Sér. A 273, 92--95 (1971; Zbl 0215.24604)]{} in the context of differential fields of characteristic zero. He proves that a 1-form admits a first integral with Riccati transcendence if and only if it admits a Godbillon-Vey sequence of length 3.
