A three-dimensional constitutive theory for shape memory alloys (SMA) is proposed on the basis of a mixture theory. The system is considered as a dynamic mixture of an austensitic hyperelastic phase, and a martensitic elastoplastic phase. Low-temperature ferroelasticity and high-temperature pseudoelasticity of an alloy (Au-47,5 at Cd) are analyzed within this model, leading to good agreement with experimental results. Stress-induced forward and inverse transformation, shape memory effects and the temperature dependence of critical stress are also described satisfactorily.
