The commutation criterion for two arbitrary real or complex matrices is considered. For the narrower class of Toeplitz matrices, this criterion can be stated in another form that admits efficient checking. It is proved that two Toeplitz matrices commute if and only if one of the matrices is the value of a linear function of the other one or both matrices belong to the same algebra of generalized circulant matrices.
