The authors consider a two-dimensional generalization of the Korteweg-de Vries equation that is different from the Kadomtsev-Petviashvili equation. The underlying assumptions are illustrated by analyzing nonlinear three-dimensional flow disturbances in two-dimensional free convection near a heated plate. Some analytical and numerical solutions are presented, and mechanisms of soliton formation and interaction are described.
