Planar diffraction problems are analyzed for a class of domains with noncompact boundaries. These problems arise in mathematical models of wave scattering by planar screens with arbitrary finite inhomogeneities. Theorems concerning the unique solvability in Sobolev spaces are proved. Numerical methods constructed on the basis of Galerkin-type variational methods are substantiated.
