The authors construct finite difference schemes of a locally high order of accuracy for the two-dimensional Poisson equation on an arbitrary nonuniform rectangular grid. Their monotonicity and conservativeness are analysed. Estimates of stability with respect to boundary conditions and the right-hand side are obtained. Convergence of the schemes is estimated in \(C\)-norms. The possibility of extending the schemes to general problems is indicated.
