Grid approximations of the Dirichlet problem are considered for a quasilinear parabolic equation with a small coefficient of the highest-order derivative. The initial condition has a discontinuity of the first kind, which initiates a rarefaction wave. The problem statement, motivation, and the basic results of a study of special numerical methods for such problems are presented.
