The authors develop numerical and analytical methods for solving an approximately posed problem to optimize a slender short-span wing in hypersonic viscous flow with boundary-layer transition. The effect of transition parameters on the optimal wing shape is examined. It is shown that the shape parameter of the wing exhibits a bifurcation as the semispan is varied. An essentially nonmonotonic variation of the bifurcation point and maximum slenderness ratio is studied as the Reynolds number is varied.
