The Cauchy problem for differential-algebraic systems is considered. The concept of an index is introduced to characterize the degree of ill-posedness of such systems. A class of high order accurate difference schemes is proposed to solve this problem numerically. If the input data are given with error, conditions are pointed out with the fulfillment of which the difference schemes proposed appear to be a regularizing operator, the regularization parameter being the step of discretization.
