\textit{B. S. Giddings} and \textit{S. A. Wolpert} [Commun. Math. Phys. 109, 177-190 (1987; Zbl 0636.32012)] proposed a procedure to obtain a new cell decomposition of the moduli space of curves. In this paper the author works out their concept in detail. The number of cells in this new decomposition is smaller in comparison with suggestions made by several other authors.
