Expecting the first detection of a gravitational wave signal for the near future, a lot of preparatory work is going on in the field of gravitational wave spectral analysis. Here the problem of estimating the power spectral density from a finite observation is of particular relevance. In the paper under review the authors briefly review a special method, known as tapering or windowing, that yields spectral estimators with particularly good bias and variance properties. Several examples are presented that have been calculated with the GRASP software package.
