Quadratic residue codes over \(\mathbb Z_8\) are defined using their idempotent generators, and it is shown that they have many properties analogous to quadratic residue codes over a finite field. The codes are studied in detail and are shown to have large automorphism groups, which will be useful in the decoding of these codes.
