The author is concerned with the following question: when does the absolute value of the Möbius function, defined on different classes of partially ordered sets, take its maximum? A sharp upper bound is given for this in the class of posets of bounded width and a classification is given of the posets which take this bound. A sharp bound for the sum of the Betti numbers for the order complexes of posets is given.
