The author examines new methods for adaptive spatial partitioning and refinement of overlapping Cartesian and structured grids (Chimera) for numerical solution of unsteady aerodynamic flow problems. All problems concerning these types of grids are addressed in detail, and strategies are derived to allow for efficient computations even in the case of highly complex moving geometries. Finally, the author proposes a grid component grouping algorithm, investigates its formal accuracy, and illustrates the theory by several three-dimensional numerical examples.
