The author presents a new projection technique for the solution of differential equations on an invariant manifold. It is shown that geometric properties such as symplecticity or reversability are preserved if a symmetric projection is used in which the initial value is perturbed in a special way away from the manifold and then projected back to the manifold after the application of a symmetric method. The efficacy of this approach is shown by a backward error analysis and some numerical testing.
