The nonhomogeneous initial-boundary value problem for the Landau-Lifshitz system of ferromagnetic spin chain with Gilbert damping in two dimensions is studied. It is proved by detailed analysis of the asymptotics for a corresponding penalty problem that there exists at least one weak solution. This solution is almost smooth in two-dimensional case and is globally smooth in one-dimensional case. The uniqueness of the solution is discussed in the Part II [ibid., No. 2, 147-151 (1998; Zbl 0973.35003)] of the article.
