Applying a method of Weil, \textit{J.-P. Serre} constructed in his book ``Groupes algébriques et corps de classes'' (Paris 1959; Zbl 0097.35604) a generalized Jacobian for a curve with a singular point. For this he used the language of \textit{A. Weil}'s book: ``Foundations of algebraic geometry'' (Providence 1962; Zbl 0168.18701). The present paper works out the same proof in the language of schemes. The main tool is Grothendieck's base change theorem. Moreover, it is proved that the generalized Jacobian coincides with the Picard variety of the curve. In an appendix it is shown that the functor of relative Cartier divisors of the curve is representable.
