The objective of the paper is to describe the (pseudo)varieties of (left, right, or bilateral) locally trivial monoids. The authors use very elementary techniques, but fail to prove more than the known results, namely those of \textit{H. Straubing} [Semigroup Forum 24, 25-38 (1982; Zbl 0503.20024)] and the reviewer [Semigroups, theory and applications, Proc. Conf., Oberwolfach/FRG 1986, Lect. Notes Math. 1320, 11-17 (1988; Zbl 0662.20044)] and what they do prove is obtained in a much harder and less elegant way. In particular, the solution of the problem proposed at the end of the paper can be easily read off from the reviewer's paper quoted above.
