The author deals with the analysis of flat rolling of bars; a new upper bound method is used to analyse the corresponding three-dimensional deformation and to put in evidence stress distributions which are not calculable by conventional methods. Thus, the hydrostatic stress in each element and the contact stress on the contact surface between material and roll in each element are calculated. We mention that the structure of the computer program depends minimally on kinematically admissible velocity fields. The calculated width spread agrees with the width spread obtained by experiments reported in the literature. Numerical results are plotted into diagrams.
