The author generalizes Tits' and Maurer's characterisation of the groups \(PGL_2(K)\) over a commutative field among all sharply triply transitive permutation groups to the case where the field \(K\) is replaced by a large class of commutative rings \(R\). This generalization is based on new insights and techniques involving the projective line over a ring.
