A data assimilation method can be applied in meteorology, numerical weather forecasting, and oceanography [see \textit{M. Ghil} et al., Adv. Geophys. 33, 141-266 (1996)]. In oceanography, data assimilation improves the estimate of ocean and atmospheric physical state. In this paper, the authors give the definition of the error covariance matrix. They also verify and compare any kind of data assimilation technique, model developments, boundary condition parametrization, and so on in the tropical Atlantic.
