The first two sections of the present paper are preliminaries on minimal submanifold theory and contact geometry. Then the author proves that the characteristic vector field of a contact metric structure determines a contact invariant embedding into the tangent unit sphere bundle if and only if the contact form is K-contact. The minimality and harmonicity of the K-contact vector fields follow from this result.
