The paper proposes an algorithm which yields the optimal maximum-likelihood sequence estimation (MSLE) performance on dispersive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) channels with finite impulse response (FIR). The detection problem is defined, and the sphere decoding algorithm is described. An illustrative simulation exhibits the efficiency of the approach as compared to the previous ones available in the literature. Some considerations on the computational complexity of the sphere decoding algorithm show that it can be easily implemented.
