The author develops some techniques to study categories of comodules over corings. It is proved that the induction functor induced by a morphism of corings has a left adjoint, called ad-induction functor. The construction generalizes results known for categories of Doi-Hopf modules and entwined modules. Separability of the induction and ad-induction functors is characterized.
