This paper is devoted to the solution of Cauchy problems for stiff differential equations or equations obtained by the method of lines, when implicit schemes are difficult to apply and the time step in classic explicit schemes is too small. The efficiency of stable explicit algorithms with variable time step is analyzed, and they are shown to require a substantially smaller number of steps for integrating a stiff Cauchy problem with a complex or cluster spectrum.
