The authors discuss the basic ideas and applications of the discrete source method. A conceptually similar approach is known as the generalized multipole technique. The method can be used to construct efficient numerical models for analyzing wave scattering by three-dimensional structures (including asymmetric ones) in the presence of a layered substrate.
