The present paper gives a new proof of the theorem due to \textit{B. F. Skubenko} [Izv. Akad. Nauk SSSR, Ser. Mat. 26, 721-752 (1962; Zbl 0107.04201)] providing an estimate of the ratio between lengths of periods for two real quadratic irrationalities of the same discriminant. The result shows that the lengths of periods cannot differ significantly. The present paper also gives an explicit value of the constant occurring in Skubenko's estimate.
