Sequences of linear operators approximating the identity operator in the space of continuous functions with the supremum norm are considered. An asymptotic expansion is investigated for these sequences. The authors show that the Komleva-type theory initiated in the paper \textit{E. A. Komleva} [Izv. Vyssh. Uchebn. Zaved., Mat. 1995, No. 4(11), 89-93 (1959; Zbl 0142.32003)], is still very useful for obtaining old and new results concerning asymptotic behavior of such operators as De La Vallée Poussin integrals and exponential-type operators. Some relations between the Komleva-type results and the Korovkin theorem are found and discussed. Moreover, some simple assumptions on approximating a sequence of operators are formulated under which associated expansions are of rational type. An effectiveness of numerical procedures based on the considered asymptotic expansions is demonstrated by numerical examples.
