This paper deals with a linear control system and is looking for an initial state such that the dynamics can be expressed as the sum of two specific vector fields. The two vector fields are associated with the ``transient'' and ``forced'' vector fields. The desired initial state and the switching procedure depend on a priori knowledge of the forced response; the geometric properties are explained by some algebraic equations and the switching instant time is explicitly obtained.
