The authors consider the initial-boundary value problem for the primitive equations in a two-dimensional domain. Their main results concern the existence of strong solutions (a) globally in time for small data, (b) locally in time for arbitrary data. Furthermore they prove that a weak solution is unique provided that there exists another weak solution satisfying an additional regularity hypothesis.
