The authors describe an \(H_\infty\) design technique for speed and rotor flux norm control of a current-fed induction motor. The procedure is carried out in two steps: First, the system is feedback linearized, using a sliding-mode observer in order to implement the linearizing feedback. This method yields two decoupled linear systems, for which the \(H_\infty\) controllers are then designed in the second step. Particular attention in the design procedure is paid to the dependence of the \(H_\infty\) gain on the bandwidth of the controller, where it turns out that bandwidth values above a certain threshold do not further increase the robustness of the system.
