The author constructs several examples of singular Calabi-Yau threefolds in projective four space which are defined over the field of rationals and have small Euler characteristic. His construction is based on astuciously selected families of polynomials related to earlier work of the author where he studied generalized Chebyshev polynomials in several variables. The Euler characteristic is computed through by reducing the varieties to finite fields.
