In this short article the author, a composer by trade, discusses various tuning systems and microtones. He sees little value in the division of the octave into 24 equal-tempered quartertones, preferring a division into 18 equal-tempered steps. He also touches on a just-intonation scale due to Heinz Bohlen. Like the better-known Bohlen-Pierce scale, it rests on a division of the perfect twelfth rather than the octave, but it contains 11 steps, as opposed to the 13 of Bohlen-Pierce.
