The authors prove that any homeomorphism of bounded variation in the plane can be approximated by a sequence of diffeomorphisms (or, equivalently, by a sequence of piecewise affine homeomorphisms). They use the ``area strict'' convergence, therefore their approximation result holds also in both the strict and the weak* sense.
