The authors construct efficient numerical methods for solving periodic initial value problems for evolution equations with Burgers nonlinearity. These methods are obtained by backward difference formulae and a detailed analysis is presented. Consistency and local stability aspects are studied and optimal order error estimates are established. Further, discretization in space by spectral methods is considered.
