The authors develop a compact difference scheme for the fourth-order fractional sub-diffusion equation. The approach combines the formula to approximate the time Caputo fractional derivative together with compact operator techniques to approximate the spatial fourth-order derivative. The authors deduce the unconditional stability and convergence of the numerical scheme by discrete energy methods. Numerical experiments are also presented in order to support the theoretical findings.
