The aim of this paper is to extend from compact groups to transitive compact groupoids the notion of spherical function. A Gefand pair \(\left( G, K \right)\) consisting of a topological compact transitive groupoid \(G\) and a topological compact subgroupoid \(K\) of \(G\) is defined by the property that the algebra of bi-\(K\)-invariant functions on \(G\) is commutative under convolution with respect to a fixed Haar system on \(G\). The notion of spherical function is studied in the case of a topological compact transitive subgroupoid \(K\subset G\) endowed with a Haar system admitting the same (quasi)invariant measure as the Haar system on \(G\).
