For a review of the first edition see [the author, Extreme states of matter in strong interaction physics. An introduction. Berlin: Springer (2012; Zbl 1241.81003)]. The present edition is updated to include results from the recent 5 years. Especially, the updates concern the calibration of quarkonium production in nuclear collisions, the relation between strangeness suppression and deconfinement, and the search for critical behavior in multi-hadron production moments in Chapters 10 and 11. Moreover, a new Chapter 13, ``Fluids and flow'', has been added. An overview beginning with elementary thermodynamics through non- and relativistic fluid dynamics until gravity, black holes and cosmology contains motives for applications of fluid mechanics to the title problems.
