With an eye on the construction of Kac-Moody groups, the author discusses the question how one can associate a group with a given Lie algebra \(L\). His construction takes place inside the universal enveloping algebra \(U(L)\). The case that \(L\) is a complex semi-simple Lie algebra is discussed in some detail. The results of this paper were incorporated in [J. Algebra 105, 542--573 (1987; Zbl 0626.22013)].
